European supercomputer in the Technology Park of Bologna

A new supercomputer worth 120 million euros is about to arrive in the Technology Park of Bologna. The project put forward by the inter-university consortium Cineca was actually selected as Italian initiative to be awarded supercomputers of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, a common European company supporting high performance computing infrastructure.
Emilia-Romagna already accounts for 70% of the national computing capacity and storage, with thousands of researchers involved. And with the new supercomputer proposed by Cineca - constituted by 67 Italian universities - the Region goes up from the 19th to the 5th position in the global ranking.
Considering that the Technology Park of Bologna will also host the Data Center the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, (ECMWF), Emilia-Romagna will become one of the biggest computing capacity sites in the world.
High performance computing is an essential instrument for numerous applications such as forecasting and management of natural disasters, industrial activities and defense against possible cyberattacks.
