Green energy

Energy for the future, today

Natural gas is suitable for several uses that can lead to environmental benefits

Rather than high emissions fossil fuels, natural gas is a flexible energy source that can be used in different contexts.

Snam is developing a wide range of projects, among which two of the main are Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) implementation in the transport.

Snam also plays a leading role in developing a national agenda for biomethane, a programmable renewable source capable of relaunching also the Italian agricultural and food sector through an innovative circular economy model, and is among Italian companies aiming to promote gas heat pumps.

Gas for climate

Mountain View

A potential of renewable gas, mainly biomethane and hydrogen, of 270 billion cubic metres through existing gas infrastructures will help Europe to eliminate CO2 emissions, saving about €217 billion annually by 2050. This is what emerges from a study presented by Gas for Climate, the group that consists of seven leading European gas transport companies (Snam, Enagás, Fluxys, Gasunie, GRTgaz, Open Grid Europe and Térega) and two renewable gas industry associations (CIB-Consorzio Italiano Biogas and EBA-European Biogas Association).

The DAFI directive

Talking about alternative fuels a key document is the 2014/94 / EU Directive, also known as the DAFI (Directive for Alternative Fuel Infrastructure), then transposed into Italian law by DLgs 16 December 2016 n° 257.

The Decree provides clear provisions for the development of alternative fuels mainly in the transport sector. Alternative fuels include natural gas - including biomethane - both in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied (LNG).
