Methane flows throughout Italy thanks to a pipeline network that spans for the whole Country. Thanks to Snam's specific know-how that designs infrastructure in equilibrium with the environment, pipeline transport guarantees high levels of security and environmental sustainability, avoiding inefficient and less reliable road transport.
To guarantee energy security, gas system has to face with ease possible demand sudden increase. For this reason Snam manages a storage system capable of storing gas during lower demand periods (i.e. Summer) and of supplying methane during periods of increased demand, deficiency or temporary interruption of imports. Gas storage is fundamental to manage fluctuations, linked to seasonal dynamics. In addition, it is a strategic solution against unforeseen events or demand's unexpected increases, engendered by particular atmospheric conditions.
Once extracted, natural gas can be liquefied thorugh a specific cooling process (-160°), that leads to a considerable reduction of volume. Thanks to reduced volume occupied, LNG can be easily carried by LNG carriers. Liquefied Natural Gas represents a fundamental resource in terms of diversification of supplies and un connecting European countries with resources, which would be impossible to connect through pipeline.
