Regasification of GNL

Liquefied natural gas is injected into the national gas grid through the interconnection with LNG terminals in Panigaglia and Rovigo.

17,500 m3 of LNG: daily maximum regasification capacity of the Panigaglia terminal

3.5 billion m3: maximum annual gas volume that can be injected into the Network

Transportation and Dispatching

Natural gas in Italy reaches the single withdrawal points along the national gas transport system which is made by the national, regional and local pipeline networks.

  • 8 entry points of the National Network for natural gas coming from abroad: Tarvisio, Gorizia, Passo Gries, Mazara del Vallo, Gela and the LNG terminals in Panigaglia, in Rovigo (Cavarzere) and in Livorno (OLT)

  • 53 entry points of the National Network at which national production is injected

  • 70.63 billion m3 of natural gas injected into the National Network

  • 32,508 km Transportation Network in use

Gas storage enables a dynamic optimization of infrastructures with the aim of satisfying requests by System users.

  • 10 storages of wich 1 not in use

  • 9 storage fields: 5 in Lombardia, 3 in Emilia Romagna and 1 in Abruzzo

  • Strategic storage: 4.5 billions m3

  • Available storage capacity: 12.0 billions m3

  • 20.00 billions m3 gas volumes moved the storage system

Italian gas system is composed by several elements that ensure national energy security.

Transportation network

Methane flows throughout Italy thanks to a pipeline network that spans for the whole Country. Thanks to Snam's specific know-how that designs infrastructure in equilibrium with the environment, pipeline transport guarantees high levels of security and environmental sustainability, avoiding inefficient and less reliable road transport.

To guarantee energy security, gas system has to face with ease possible demand sudden increase. For this reason Snam manages a storage system capable of storing gas during lower demand periods (i.e. Summer) and of supplying methane during periods of increased demand, deficiency or temporary interruption of imports. Gas storage is fundamental to manage fluctuations, linked to seasonal dynamics. In addition, it is a strategic solution against unforeseen events or demand's unexpected increases, engendered by particular atmospheric conditions.

LNG regasification

Once extracted, natural gas can be liquefied thorugh a specific cooling process (-160°), that leads to a considerable reduction of volume. Thanks to reduced volume occupied, LNG can be easily carried by LNG carriers. Liquefied Natural Gas represents a fundamental resource in terms of diversification of supplies and un connecting European countries with resources, which would be impossible to connect through pipeline.
