Hydrogen-powered trains, Puglia applies for the MoIT call for proposals

The region's goal is to replace all diesel locomotives by 2050

The application of the Puglia Region as a beneficiary of a grant for the testing of hydrogen for regional rail transport, under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport's managerial decree of last November 2022, which made available a total of 300 million euros with the aim of building refueling stations for H2-powered trains and renewing fleets with hydrogen-powered rolling stock, was sent on January 20.
A Region statement recalls that last December the Council approved the document "H2Puglia2030-Regional Hydrogen Strategy," which explicitly mentions direct funding to the Southeastern Railways with the ultimate goal of replacing all diesel locomotives on non-electrified routes by 2050 with clean-fueled rolling stock, including hydrogen, and experimenting, in an integrated way (including research and development activities), with hydrogen production for rail transport, particularly where Hydrogen Valleys will be built.
The statement also notes that by a resolution dated January 18, Southeast Railways (Ferrovie del Sud Est) and Automobile Services was identified as the implementing party for the project.
