First stretch of Montalbano Elicona-Messina methane gas pipeline becomes operative
At the end of September the first 16.4 km of the Montalbano Elicona-Messina methane gas pipeline
were completed and became operative. This first stretch, with a rated diameter of 1200 mm (48?),
passes through the municipalities of Montalbano Elicona and Tripi, both in the Province of Messina.
Once finished, the entire works will be 83 kilometre in length and will allow the volumes of natural gas imported from North Africa to be increased. A large part of the route will run parallel to the two existing pipelines that run through the mountainous areas of 21 communities in the province of Messina.
By the end of 2008 a further 25.2 km will have been completed and become operational, whilst completion of the entire methane gas pipeline is scheduled for the 1st half of 2009.
Along the stretch already completed, once the morphological works have been finished, as is general practice re-vegetation work will take place. Specifically, fence posts and wattling will be laid and, later, native species of plants will be planted.
