Mazara del Vallo-Menfi methane gas pipeline enters service in Sicily. Environmental restoration work begins
At the end of August the methane gas pipeline from Mazara del Vallo to Menfi was completed and brought into service. The pipeline will increase the natural gas transport capacity from North Africa. The pipeline is 42 kilometres long and has a rated diameter of 1,200 mm (48?).
The entire length of pipeline runs parallel to the two existing methane pipelines through an area that is predominantly flat, affecting the Municipalities of Mazara del Vallo, Campobello di Mazara, Castelvetrano (in Trapani province) and Menfi (in Agrigento province).
Environmental restoration work, which is always planned for projects like this, is to begin shortly. Specifically, fence posts and wattling will be laid and, later, native species of plants will be planted to allow regrowth and the complete environmental recovery of the land crossed by the pipeline.
