Snam Dispatching Centre celebrates 60 years
Snam yesterday celebrated the first 60 years of its Dispatching Center, the technological “brain”" " " " " " " " " " of the Italian gas network, located in San Donato Milanese, Italy.
Snam’s Dispatching Centre has a strategic function for the purpose of managing energy flows across the Country: from its operations room, key infrastructure of the Italian gas system are monitored and remotely controlled, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Since 1962, the transportation network monitored by the Dispatching Centre has increased from 5,000 km to the current 33,500 km. The site also oversees 13 compressor stations, 9 storage facilities and 8 entry points for gas import, totaling about 95 billion cubic meters of gas moved each year between transportation and storage activities. A large led wall, about 60 square meters in size, gives Dispatching operators an overview of the national grid with the main points of interest and related process information.
Recently renovated, the Dispatching Centre is now at the forefront of the challenges that characterize the future of Snam and of the national energy system, from investments in innovation (Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, cloud and edge computing) to the transition to a net-zero-emissions future, thanks in part to the transportation of decarbonized molecules (i.e. biomethane, hydrogen) in the existing network.
