A more frequent use of gas results in minor emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter
Natural gas is a clean and versatile energy source. Ensuring a significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared to other fossil fuels, methane is suitable for several uses, including power generation, heating and industrial production.
Natural gas is the fossil source with the lowest carbon content when compared to coal and oil (-45% and -25%, respectively) and it is capable of compensating neither programmable nor storable intermittent renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind.
It already has an efficient transportation, distribution and storage infrastructure, that could foster a progressive reduction of pollutant emissions, ensuring a flexible, programmable and economical energy system. A feasible scenario, thanks to an already in place and efficient gas-powered electricity generation.
In addition, natural gas is also suitable for innovative and alternative applications, in order to achieve and efficient and sustainable energy mix.
