Acting for the environment

The environmental challenges faced today are the fight against climate change and the protection of biodiversity.

In 2019 total GHG emissions decreased of 2.6% respect to 2018.
Thanks to the operations carried out, the emissions of 181,800 tonnes of CO2eq into the atmosphere was avoided. It is the highest figure in recent years (+17% compared to 2018).

Biodiversity. 747 km of environmental monitoring completed on the network and 73 km of plant care was carried out

To date, considering the most sensitive issues worldwide and Snam’s operational activity, the two main challenges facing the company are:

  • a growing commitment to the fight against climate change and the reduction of energy consumption;
  • the protection of nature and biodiversity
    In addition to these two main issues, Snam also cares about other environmental issues, such as air protection, environmental restoration, and waste and water management, the protection of which contributes to the creation of a more habitable environment.

    Environmental protection is an integral element of company policy and guides investment decisions for all of Snam’s activities. It is clearly evident in the corporate strategy that combines environmental and economic development with an emphasis on regional issues.

    In particular, Snam complies with national and EU environmental legislation under the direction of a specific centralised department that provides specialised consultancy to all Snam subsidiaries/operating units, drafting support documents for the appropriate management of individual environmental issues and, in collaboration with the unit concerned, organises specific training events.
