In 2021, approximately 6.44 million cubic metres of water was withdrawn: 6.05 million cubic metres of sea water and 0.39 million cubic metres of freshwater. The sea water is used for cooling purposes and the same volume discharged into the sea.

Water procurement and discharge in the activities of Snam represents a relatively insignificant environmental factor, in terms of both the quantities used and the type of discharges. Sea water and fresh water are used in the production process and offices respectively, resulting in total withdrawal of approximately 6.44 million cubic metres in 2021 (6.05 million cubic metres of sea water and 0.39 million cubic metres of fresh water).

The fresh water withdrawal increased by 25% compared to 2020 mainly as a result of the inclusion of Mieci and Evolve in the scope of consolidation for the full reporting year (they were included for only three months in 2020), and the number of their employees increased in 2021. 


Sea water is taken for the cooling of auxiliary plants at the Panigaglia LNG plant in Liguria, and is completely discharged into the sea in the same volume, with a slightly higher temperature value (within the terms of the law). The withdrawal is in line with that had in 2020.

The upstream storage activities produced approximately 6,909 cubic metres of process water (+14% compared with 2020), all sent to an external treatment plant for treatment.


With regard to water discharges, wastewater is either conveyed to the sewerage system (78% of the total) or discharged, even after treatment, into the soil and surface water bodies (22% of the total).

To control the discharge of domestic waste water in the gas compressor stations,  phytodepuration  plants were installed over the years at corporate sites away from the sewage networks. These phyto-purification plants eliminate discharge since waste water is treated and fully absorbed by planted vegetation following the separation of sedimentable solids.

All the compression stations, except for the Messina compression plant, which is connected to the national sewage system, are equipped with phyto-purification plant systems, besides the introduction of phytodepuration plants in the storage plants is ongoing.
