Snam considers sustainability with respect to all stakeholders to be an integral part of its business model.
Sustainability is a key driver of the company’s strategic and operational decision-making process and is instrumental in ensuring sustainable growth over the long term while ensuring that the added value generated is shared with all stakeholders.
Snam’s approach to sustainability is inspired by the well-established concepts first formulated by Edward Freeman in 1984 and subsequently developed, in which corporate social responsibility is defined as “a concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis, “ therefore placing stakeholders at its core.
Snam manages the sustainability governance process by means of a model consisting of four main phases: Planning, Management, Control and Communication. Starting with the sustainability policy, the corporate strategic plan and stakeholders’ needs, the Snam management model provides for:
- the establishment of improvement objectives
- the identification of competent corporate functions, activities and projects to be implemented
- the monitoring of results
- final reporting

The Sustainability Unit is included in the Institutional Affairs, ESG, Communication and Marketing Department under the ESG officer and supports the ESG Committee that performs proactive and advisory functions with the Board of Directors in order to promote the continued integration of environmental, social and governance factors in the company's strategies.
