THE PANIGAGLIA TERMINAL

Regasification

To be imported from distant production fields, gas can be liquefied and transported by sea in gas tankers. The LNG is then reheated and regasified; after which the gas is injected into the Transport Network.

The Panigaglia terminal, owned by Snam, is the first LNG regasification facility built in Italy.

Once extracted, natural gas can be liquefied through a specific cooling process (that brings gas at -160 ° C). The operation engenders a remarkable reduction in volume. In liquid state, Liquefied natural gas (LNG) can be easily stored and transported by sea, thanks to special vessels. In this way the LNG can travel for thousands kilometers and reach the Italian regasification facilities. Once arrived, liquefied natural gas is discharged at a storage facility that takes it back to the gaseous form and makes it available for traditional consumption. The import of LNG through sea allows further diversification of sources of supply, with positive outcomes on national energy security.

The LNG also has several alternative uses, which allow to replace traditional fossil fuels to significantly reduce pollutant emissions.

SistemaGas_Infrastrutture_rigassificazione_1Natural gas is injected into the national transportation network through the interconnection with the GNL terminal at Panigaglia as well. The plant is located in the town of Fezzano di Porto Venere (SP) and is the first structure which can receive and regasify liquefied natural gas (GNL) in Italy. Between 1990 and 1996 there was a significant landscape and environmental rehabilitation project carried out by the School of Architecture and Landscape of Genoa which facilitated the location of the plant in its surroundings.

The terminal occupies an area of 45,000 square metres and consists of two holding tanks of 50,000 cubic metres each, steam plants and a dock for GNL carriers. The criteria for planning, construction and operation of the Panigaglia terminal meet the most stringent international regulations and use the most modern technologies for security and environmental protection.

In the regasification terminal, the liquid methane (-160°C) is returned to its gaseous state by the simple operation of heating and it is then injected into the gas pipeline networks.
