Through its subsidiary company Stogit, Snam is the largest storage operator in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. It manages nine storage facilities (Brugherio, Bordolano, Cortemaggiore, Fiume Treste, Minerbio, Ripalta, Sabbioncello, Sergnano and Settala), which operates in synergy with the transport and regasification infrastructures of the Company, ensuring energy security of the Country.
Snam carries out its activity through an integrated system of infrastructures, composed of deposits, gas treatment plants, compression stations and dispatching operations.
The storage system make it possible to compensate for the different requirements for gas supply and consumption: whilst supply - consisting of imports from overseas and domestic production - has a substantially constant flow throughout the year, the demand for gas is concentrated mainly in the winter period. Storage also ensures that quantities of strategic gas are available to compensate for any lack of or reduction in non-EU supply or crises in the gas system.

Bordolano
The Bordolano plant operates from 2016: it is a jewel of efficiency, technology, safety and environmental sustainability that contributes to making the Italian storage system even safer.
Natural gas storage is a specialized process, where Snam operates according to strict safety and enviromental sustainability criteria.
Stogit storage fields are depleted gas production reservoirs, located at average depths of between 1,000 and 1,500 metres below the surface. Having protected natural gas for centuries, these conformations are in fact suitable for containing new gas that is injected by our technicians.
Injection phase is concentrated between April and October, from November to March gas is withdrawn, processed and returned to shippers through the transport network.
The key element is the gas cushion, defined as the minimum amount of gas that must be present in the reservoir to allow the dispensing of the working gas - present in the storage phase - and counteract the rise of the aquifer without impairing the mining characteristics of the Field.
