The role of infrastructure

The networks that Snam creates and manages can play a key role in the energy transition.

Snam is one of the world's leading energy infrastructure companies. Thanks to a sustainable and technologically advanced network, it guarantees security of supply, enables the energy transition and promotes the development of the territories in which it operates.

Over the decades, Snam has created the most developed and diversified gas infrastructure system in Europe, contributing to the opening of strategic energy corridors for the supply not only of Italy but of the entire continent, and developing recognized best practices internationally, from the design of the networks to the environmental restoration of the areas in which it operates.

Snam wants to play a key role in the evolution towards new economic models based on a more efficient use of resources and an increasing use of renewable energies, helping to combat climate change and improve air quality.

In this context, new activities such as sustainable mobility and renewable gases such as biomethane and hydrogen, which can leverage existing gas infrastructures, and energy efficiency, are destined to become increasingly important. Snam invests in these businesses through the SnamTec (Tomorrow's Energy Company) innovation program, which also aims to make the company's activities more sustainable and less impactful from an environmental point of view.

Commitment to reducing emissions

In the 2019-2023 strategic plan, Snam has increased its core business sustainability objectives, setting a target of 40% reduction of methane emissions by 2025 and 40% of direct and indirect CO2 emissions equivalent to 2030. For the company to achieve these objectives, an investment plan has been implemented which makes it possible to maintain and develop programs to capture and mitigate natural gas emissions in transport, storage and regasification activities.

In 2018, Snam signed the Methane Guiding Principles which commit the company to reduce methane emissions deriving from its activities in the natural gas infrastructure, while at the same time committing itself to encourage the other players in the entire value chain - from the producer to the final consumer - to pursue the same goal. The guiding principles are shared by many other industry leaders globally.
